Which way search terms are evaluated?

Number of Search Terms

The search facilities "Package name", "file name", "package contains file", "Requires" and "Provides" consider only the first search term. Search by summary can be done using several search terms.

Length of Search Terms

For best results, the length of a search term must be at least three characters. Shorter terms tend to slow down your search without improving the results.

Important shorter search terms, such as "qt", "mc" or "vi" are not affected by this rule by searches by package name.

Phrase Searches

Search for complete phrases by enclosing them in quotation marks. Words enclosed in double quotes will appear together in all results exactly as you have entered them. Phrase searches can only be done in conjunction with the search by summary.

rpmseek searches for exactly the words that you enter in the search box. Searching for "libc" or "libc*" will not yield "libc5" or "glibc". Searches by "Package Name" are not affected by this.

rpmseek only returns results which include all of your search terms. There is no need to include some kind of operator between terms.

Wildcards

Generally, the use of wildcards is not possible and not required. Searches by name and summary include "like matches" automatically.

Restriction by System Architecture and Distribution

All inquiries can be restricted to any system architecture, distribution and package type by using the extended seek search mask.

Sensitivity and Match Type

The following table shows the sensitivity and the match type for each query type:

Name enclosed in quotation marks   X X
File Name X   X
