Restriction of Package Lists

The package lists can be restricted by distributions and/or architectures.

By using the configuration dialog in the "My rpmseek" area, you can define distributions and/or architectures that are displayed by opening a package list.

When a default selection has been defined, it is displayed beside the captions "Architecture" and "Distribution" (Point A). This default selection is represented in the select boxes by the line "-- Selection". If you did not define a default selection in the "My rpmseek" area, all existing files are displayed.

If the package list was opend by using the "Browse by Distribution" overview, the appropriate distribution is preselected. The same goes for to the "Browse by Architecture" overview pages.

Dependencies between Select Boxes

The entries of the select boxes are depending on each other. That means that one select box lists only those distributions or architectures that fit the actual active selection of the other select box. This way it is ensured that the selectable combinations will always find results.

In the example above, the select box "Show Architecture" (Point C) lists the Architectures i386, i586 and src. It does not mean that the package "wine" exists only for these architectures, it rather signifies that there are no other architectures for the actual selection of distributions (Mandrake and RedHat, Select Box B). If the line "-- All --" is selected at this point in the select box "Show Architecture", not all architectures are listed for which the package "wine" is available but those packages that match the selection in the select box "Show Distribution". In our example it is i386, i586 and src.

If you want to have all architectures listed in the select box "Show Architecture" that the package "wine" exists for, you first have to revoke the restriction by distribution that is shown in the select box "Show Distribution". In this select box the line "-- All --" has to be selected. If you choose a special distribution at this point, the select box "Show Architecture" will list all architectures that the package "wine" exists for within the chosen distribution.

The same goes for the handling of the select box "Show Distribution".

If your distribution is not listed here (Select Box D), it means that the package "wine" does not exist for the wanted distribution in combination with the selected architecture (Select Box E - i386, i586, i686). If you want all distributions to be listed for which the package "wine" exists, you have to revoke the restriction by architecture in the select box "Show Architecture" (Punkt E).

In a nutshell:

  • One select box lists only those entries which will provide results considering the selection of the other select box.
  • The line "-- Selection" restricts the package list to distributions and architectures listed at Point A. This selection can be defined and modified in the "My rpmseek" area.
  • By choosing the line "-- All --", all distributions or architectures are being selected which are actually listed in the appropriate select box and which are matching the selection in the other select box.

If you want to have all files listed that exist for a special software package, the line "-- All --" has to be selected in both select boxes.
